- What is your role at Confex and how long have you worked here?
I am MD of Confex and in charge of all the financial side including paying bonuses out to Members. I have been here for 22 years now. I joined the firm when we were based in Water Orton near Birmingham, and since then we moved to Chipping Norton which was much nearer to my home, and now to our offices in Moreton-in-Marsh.
- What did you do before joining Confex?
I ran a farming and horse livery and sales business for 25 years. We had 40 stables and ran a number of Horse Events too, which was extremely hard work physically.
- What do you do when you’re not at Confex?
Obviously following on from my previous profession I am still very keen on the equine side of life, but now just for pleasure. My whole family, including my grandchildren, all participate in riding and competing horses. I am also very keen on the theatre and cinema. I live very near to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and try not to miss any plays there, as well as going to theatres in Cheltenham and Oxford.
- If you were able to retire tomorrow, how would you spend your time?
I have no desire to retire as I still really enjoy being involved in the business. However I would like to travel more to places further afield such as Australia.
- Who inspires you?
My father (founder of Confex) who died in 2013 was a great entrepreneur and encouraged us all to be brave and adventurous in business.
- What type of business would you go into, if it wasn’t wholesale?
Any type of entrepreneurial start-up would be exciting and challenging.
- What is the most interesting place you have visited and why?
I am very keen on history and art and love Andalusia with Granada and Cordoba being the highlights, and Madrid for the amazing art galleries.
- What do you like about working at Confex?
I have very much enjoyed progressing the business from a small relatively simple trading company, to the large and complex Confex we have now. Setting up Central Distribution and all the modern IT has given me a huge sense of satisfaction.
